What to prepare before building a business website in Malaysia

By Mohd Asyraf Bin Mohd Pauzi · Updated 15 Oct 2026 · 4 min read

Website projects in Malaysia are rarely delayed by code. They are delayed by missing photos, a domain registered by a former staff member, or a director who sees the draft for the first time two days before launch. This checklist covers what to sort out before you ask for quotes.

1. Decide what the website must do

Pick one or two measurable goals. "Get more WhatsApp enquiries for aircond servicing in Seremban" gives a developer something to design around. "Look professional" does not.

  • What should a visitor do: call, WhatsApp, fill a form, book, or buy?
  • Who is the main visitor: consumers, corporate buyers, government procurement, job seekers?
  • Which languages: English, Bahasa Melayu, Chinese, or a mix?

2. List the pages

A typical SME site needs:

  • Home
  • One page per main service or product line (better than a single "Services" page for SEO)
  • About, with real names and photos
  • Projects, portfolio, or case studies
  • Contact, with address, map, operating hours, and WhatsApp
  • Privacy notice, and terms if you sell online

3. Gather the content

ItemWho usually provides itNotes
Logo (vector: AI, SVG, or PDF)You or your designerA blurry JPEG logo limits the whole design
Service descriptionsYou, edited by the developer or a writerSpecific beats generic: areas served, turnaround, brands handled
Photos of team, premises, and workYou or a photographerReal photos build more trust than stock images
Client logos and testimonialsYou, with client permissionAsk permission in writing
SSM number, address, operating hoursYouMust match your Google Business Profile exactly

4. Domain, hosting, and email

  • Domain: .com.my requires company registration documents; .my is open to Malaysian registrants; .com is international. Register it under the company, with a company email.
  • Hosting: choose based on what will run on it. A brochure site, a WooCommerce store, and a custom Laravel system have different needs. Servers in or near Malaysia help local speed.
  • Email: use Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 for business email rather than the hosting provider's mailbox, so email keeps working if the website moves.
  • DNS: Cloudflare in front of the domain adds caching and a firewall at no cost on the free plan.

5. Ownership and access

Many painful website problems come from access: a domain that expired in a former employee's account, or hosting nobody can log in to. Before work starts, agree in writing that:

  • Domain, hosting, Google Analytics, Search Console, and Google Business Profile are owned by your business
  • Premium plugin or theme licences are in your name or clearly transferred at handover
  • You receive all admin logins and, for custom code, repository access
  • A privacy notice if you collect personal data through forms or orders (Personal Data Protection Act 2010)
  • Terms, refund, and delivery policies for online sales
  • Your registered business name and SSM number in the footer
  • Consent wording on forms that send marketing messages

7. Enquiry channels

Most Malaysian customers prefer WhatsApp. Add a click-to-chat link with a prefilled message for each service, so you know which page the enquiry came from. Keep a form as well for customers who prefer email, and route both to someone who replies quickly.

8. Measurement from day one

  • Google Analytics 4 with events for WhatsApp clicks, calls, and form submissions
  • Google Search Console verified for the domain
  • A Google Business Profile with the same name, address, and phone as the website

9. Agree who maintains it

Decide before launch who updates plugins, renews the domain, checks backups, and edits content. See website maintenance cost.

10. Expect a realistic timeline

A typical company website project moves through these stages:

StageWhat happensWhat you provide
PlanningGoals, page list, features, and content plan agreedBrief, decisions, examples you like
DesignHome page and key templates designed and reviewedLogo, brand colours, feedback
BuildPages built on a staging siteFinal text and photos
ReviewYou test on phone and desktop, request fixesOne consolidated list of changes
LaunchDNS switched, redirects, analytics, Search ConsoleDomain access, final approval
HandoverTraining, logins, documentationSomeone to own the site internally

Why website projects stall

  • Content arrives late. Write the service pages early, even as rough drafts.
  • Too many approvers. Agree on one person who collects feedback and makes decisions.
  • Feedback in pieces. Ten WhatsApp messages over two weeks slow everything; one list per review round is faster.
  • Scope grows mid-project. New ideas are normal, but park them for phase two unless they are essential for launch.
  • Missing access. Nobody knows the domain login, and recovering it takes weeks. Sort this out first.

Send this with your quote request

  • Goal of the site and the main call to action
  • Page list and languages
  • Which content is ready and which needs writing
  • Features: booking, online payment, member area, multilingual
  • Deadline and budget range
  • Two or three websites you like, and why

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose a .com, .my, or .com.my domain?

A .com.my domain signals a Malaysian business but requires company registration documents. A .my domain is open to registrants in Malaysia. A .com is international. Many businesses register the .com.my and the .com and redirect one to the other.

Who should register the domain and hosting?

Your business, using a company email address you control. Your developer can be given access, but the accounts should not be in a freelancer or agency personal account.

Do I need a privacy notice on my website?

If the website collects personal data, for example through contact forms, quote requests, or online orders, you should publish a privacy notice describing what you collect and why, in line with the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.

Who writes the content?

You know your business best, so the facts should come from you. A developer or copywriter can structure and edit it. Missing content is the most common reason Malaysian website projects are delayed.
