Why your WordPress site is slow, and how to fix it

By Mohd Asyraf Bin Mohd Pauzi · Updated 15 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

A slow website costs enquiries quietly. Visitors on mobile data leave before the page appears, and Google uses real-user speed data as one of many ranking signals. The fix is rarely one magic plugin. It is finding which of a handful of usual causes applies to your site.

Step 1: Measure before changing anything

  • Run the home page and one key page (product, service, or contact) through PageSpeed Insights. Look at the field data from real visitors first, then the lab report.
  • Check Core Web Vitals in Google Search Console to see which page groups fail.
  • Note the server response time (time to first byte). If the server takes over a second to respond, front-end tweaks will not save you.
MetricGoodWhat it usually points to
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)≤ 2.5 sSlow hosting, huge hero images, render-blocking CSS and fonts
Interaction to Next Paint (INP)≤ 200 msToo much JavaScript: builders, sliders, chat widgets, tracking pixels
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)≤ 0.1Images without dimensions, late-loading banners and fonts

Step 2: The usual causes, in order of impact

1. Hosting

Cheap shared hosting with dozens of sites on one server, an old PHP version, or a server far from your visitors makes everything slow. Moving to a better plan or a VPS near Malaysia, on a current PHP version, is often the single largest improvement.

2. No page caching

Without caching, WordPress rebuilds every page from the database for every visitor. A page cache (from the host, a plugin such as WP Rocket or LiteSpeed Cache, or Cloudflare) serves a stored copy instead. For busy WooCommerce sites, an object cache such as Redis helps the uncached pages.

3. Images

  • Upload images at the size they display, not straight from a phone camera
  • Serve WebP or AVIF
  • Lazy-load images below the fold, but never the main hero image
  • Always set width and height so the layout does not jump

4. Page builder and theme weight

Multi-purpose themes and builder add-on packs load features you never use. Disable unused widgets, avoid stacking two builders, and replace heavy sliders with a single static hero.

5. Plugins

Plugin count matters less than what each plugin does. One badly written plugin that runs a slow database query on every page can cost more than twenty light ones. Use a profiler such as Query Monitor on staging to find the expensive ones.

6. Third-party scripts

Live chat widgets, multiple tracking pixels, embedded social feeds, and video players are common causes of poor INP. Load them only on the pages that need them, or delay them until the visitor interacts.

7. Fonts

Load two font families at most, only the weights you use, with font-display: swap, and host them locally if possible.

8. Database bloat

Years of post revisions, expired transients, and leftover options from deleted plugins slow down older sites. Clean them carefully, after a backup.

WooCommerce-specific checks

  • Cart, checkout, and account pages cannot be fully cached, so hosting and object caching matter more
  • Limit cart fragment AJAX requests on pages that do not show the mini-cart
  • Keep product images consistent in size and compressed
  • Review shipping and payment plugins for slow external API calls at checkout

Think about mobile visitors first

Most Malaysian visitors to a business website arrive on a phone, often on mobile data and a mid-range device. A page that feels fast on an office laptop with fibre broadband can be slow for them. Test on a real mid-range Android phone over mobile data, and use the mobile results in PageSpeed Insights as your main target rather than the desktop score.

Realistic targets for page-builder sites

A site built with Elementor or a similar builder can pass Core Web Vitals, but a perfect lab score is rarely worth chasing. Aim for "good" on the field data in Search Console for your key pages. Spend effort on the pages that bring enquiries (home, service pages, product pages, contact) before polishing pages nobody visits.

Step 3: Change one thing at a time

Make changes on staging, re-test after each one, and keep notes. Combining five optimisation plugins at once is how sites end up broken in ways nobody can explain. Field data in Search Console takes about four weeks to reflect improvements, so judge results over a month.

When speed problems mean a rebuild

If the theme is abandoned, the builder output is enormous, and every fix breaks something else, a rebuild on a lean theme or a different stack may cost less than repeated patching. See redesign or full rebuild and WordPress vs a custom-coded website.

Frequently asked questions

What are good Core Web Vitals scores?

Google treats Largest Contentful Paint at or under 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint at or under 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift at or under 0.1 as good, measured for most real visitors.

Will a caching plugin fix my slow site?

It often helps a lot for visitors who are not logged in, but it cannot fix slow hosting, oversized images, heavy third-party scripts, or slow WooCommerce cart and checkout pages, which are usually not cached.

Is Elementor slow?

Page builders add extra HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, so a builder site starts heavier than a lean theme. A carefully built Elementor site can still pass Core Web Vitals. Problems come from stacking add-on packs, sliders, animations, and large background videos.

Does hosting location matter for Malaysian visitors?

Yes. A server or CDN edge in or near Malaysia, such as Singapore, reduces latency for local visitors. Using Cloudflare also serves cached files from nearby edge locations.
